The Tennessee Titans are suing Southern California and coach Lane Kiffin for “maliciously” luring away assistant running backs coach Kennedy Pola a week before training camp opens. Tennessee Football Inc., the company that owns the Titans online casino, filed the lawsuit Monday in Davidson County Chancery Court against both the university and Kiffin.

The San Diego Chargers opened training camp Monday without Ryan Mathews, the heir apparent to LaDainian Tomlinson. It’s a theme that should be repeated on Thursday, when the veteran reporting date is expected to pass with no sign of Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson, left tackle Marcus McNeill and perhaps outside linebacker Shawne Merriman.

The Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks have acquired center Jeff Taffe from the Florida Panthers in exchange for center Marty Reasoner. The 29-year-old Jaffe had a goal and an assist in 21 games with the Panthers last season. He has 21 goals and 23 assists over parts of seven seasons with Phoenix (2002-04, 2005, 2006-07), New York Rangers (2005), Pittsburgh (2007-09) and Florida (2009-10).

Michael Vick has reached the point in his comeback where he doesn’t have to prove himself anymore. The New York Jets beat Philadelphia 21-17 in their preseason finale Thursday night, while Vick led the Eagles to a field goal in two series and Kurt Coleman scored on two fumble returns. Making his first start in four years, Vick played just one quarter before heading to the bench.

The NHL has extended its deadline to Friday for approving Ilya Kovalchuk’s $100 million, 15-year contract with the New Jersey Devils. The league and the NHL Players’ Association announced the new deadline Wednesday. The NHL has already rejected a front-loaded, 17-year deal valued at $102 million because the structure of the deal would have circumvented the league’s salary cap.

San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison is stepping down from his job running the day-to-day operations of the club. The team announced Wednesday that Jamison’s last day as CEO will be Oct. 1. A search for a replacement will begin soon. Jamison will remain part of the ownership and will be the team’s representative on the NHL’s Board of Governors.

Hiroki Kuroda didn’t realize he had a no-hitter going until the fifth inning. It should have come as no surprise, though. He’s been at his best against Philadelphia. Kuroda took his no-hit bid into the eighth and Rod Barajas homered in his home debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won 3-0 Monday night to move within 5 1/2 games of the Phillies in the NL wild-card race.
